Why the Es Vedrà Sunset Is Unlike Any Other
Every evening between May and October, a ritual plays out along the southwest coast of Ibiza. Dozens of people converge on Cala d'Hort beach and the hillside lookouts above it, facing west, waiting. Then it happens: the sun drops behind the 413-metre rock of Es Vedrà, igniting it in orange and red before it disappears into the sea.
This guide covers every aspect of experiencing the Es Vedrà sunset — from the best viewpoints on land to watching it from the water.
Best Es Vedrà Viewpoints for Sunset
1. Cala d'Hort Beach (Best for Beginners)
The classic and most accessible viewpoint. A white pebble beach facing directly southwest toward Es Vedrà. There are beach bars where you can order a drink and watch from a sun lounger. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to secure a spot in high season.
2. Torre des Savinar (Best for Photographers)
A 16th-century watchtower on the cliffs above Cala d'Hort. The climb takes about 15 minutes on a rough path but rewards you with an elevated perspective — Es Vedrà from above, with the sea all around it.
3. Sunset Boat Tour (Best Overall Experience)
Watching the sunset from the water — ideally from directly beside Es Vedrà — is the most immersive experience. As the light changes, the rock shifts from grey to amber to deep copper. Boat tours depart from Ibiza Town harbour, typically running 3–4 hours. Prices from €79 per person.
Best Times to See the Es Vedrà Sunset by Month
- June–July: 21:15–21:25 (late, warm light)
- August–September: 20:30–21:00 (popular period)
- October: 19:30–20:00 (golden hour quality is best)
- May: 20:45–21:00 (fewer crowds, good conditions)
Es Vedrà Sunset Photography Tips
- Arrive early. The light starts changing 90 minutes before sunset.
- Face west. Position yourself so Es Vedrà is between you and the sun for the silhouette effect.
- Use a long lens from Cala d'Hort. A 200mm+ focal length makes Es Vedrà fill the frame.
- Shoot from the boat. Boat trips get you to angles that no land viewpoint can match.
